India's Dedicated Freight Corridors need specialised inspection and maintenance vehicles that can operate on both road and rail. Parkline Infra is one of India's approved RRV manufacturers — here is how RRVs work and why they matter.
What Is a Rail-Road Vehicle (RRV)?
A Rail-Road Vehicle (RRV) is a dual-mode vehicle capable of travelling on both road and railway track. Fitted with retractable rail wheels that engage the track and disengage for road travel, RRVs can approach a railway worksite by road, transition to rail operation at a level crossing or dedicated access point, and then travel along the track to the work location.
RRVs are used for:
- • Track geometry measurement and inspection
- • Infrastructure inspection (bridge, embankment, drainage)
- • Small material and equipment transport for maintenance crews
- • Emergency access to remote track locations
Why RRVs Matter for the Dedicated Freight Corridors
India's Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) are among the world's largest rail infrastructure projects — covering over 3,300 km of new high-speed freight rail. These corridors are designed for high-frequency freight operation, which means:
RRVs dramatically improve the efficiency of maintenance operations — reducing the time to mobilise a maintenance crew to a work location from hours (by foot) to minutes (by RRV).
Parkline Infra's RRV Manufacturing Capability
Parkline Infra Private Limited is an approved manufacturer of mechanically and hydraulically operated RRVs. Our in-house engineering team designs, fabricates, and assembles RRVs configured to specific project requirements.
Mechanically operated RRVs use mechanical drive systems for both road and rail operation — robust, low-maintenance, and suited to general track inspection and light maintenance.
Hydraulically operated RRVs use hydraulic actuation for rail wheel deployment and may incorporate hydraulic auxiliary equipment — suited to heavier maintenance operations where equipment needs to be deployed from the vehicle.
The Mauritius Metro Project
Through L&T Construction, Parkline Infra designed and manufactured rail-mounted trolleys for the Mauritius Metro Express project — demonstrating that our RRV engineering meets international infrastructure project specifications.
EDFC/WDFC Deployment
Parkline's RRVs are deployed on L&T's EDFC and WDFC maintenance programme — directly supporting India's most critical freight rail infrastructure.
Technical Considerations in RRV Design
Track gauge compatibility: DFC uses standard gauge (1,435 mm) for WDFC and broad gauge (1,676 mm) for EDFC. RRVs must be designed for the specific gauge of each project.
Axle load limits: Railway track imposes strict axle load limits on maintenance vehicles to prevent track damage. RRV design must ensure total vehicle weight and axle distribution remain within prescribed limits.
Rail wheel material: High-quality steel rail wheels are specified to match railway standards and ensure safe interaction with the running rail.
Transition speed: Safe transition between road and rail mode is a critical design element — both mechanical and hydraulic actuation systems must be reliable and fast.
